Nepali Kundali matching for marriage (Kundali Milan)

In most Nepali families, two Kundalis are matched before a marriage is agreed. Sometimes it is a formality and sometimes it decides everything. Either way, it helps to know what the matching actually measures, what a guna score can and cannot tell you, and which doshas are worth taking seriously.

This guide explains Kundali Milan as it is practised in Nepal, using the traditional Parashari method with Lahiri ayanamsa. It is written by Jyotish Prakash Basistha, who has read Kundalis since 2007/08 and has consulted from Australia since 2016.

What is Kundali matching (Kundali Milan)?

Kundali matching compares the birth charts of two people to see how well their natures, health, family life and timing fit together. The best-known part is Ashtakoot guna milan, a point system out of 36 based mainly on the Moon’s sign and nakshatra in each chart. A full matching goes further: it reads both charts as a whole, looks at the 7th house and its lord, Venus, Mars and Jupiter, checks for Mangal dosha, and compares the dasha periods each person is about to live through.

Think of guna milan as the first screening and the chart reading as the real examination. A Jyotishi who gives you only a number has done half the work.

Ashtakoot guna milan: the 8 kootas and what each means

Ashtakoot means “eight factors”. Each koota carries one point more than the one before it, so the later kootas weigh more in the total of 36.

  • Varna (1 point): the inner temperament and sense of duty each person brings, judged from the Moon sign’s group.
  • Vashya (2 points): natural attraction and how easily the two influence and accommodate each other.
  • Tara (3 points): counted from one birth nakshatra to the other; read for wellbeing and how fortunate the bond is for each partner.
  • Yoni (4 points): each nakshatra has an animal symbol; this koota reads instinctive and physical compatibility.
  • Graha Maitri (5 points): whether the lords of the two Moon signs are friends; read for mental wavelength and day-to-day understanding.
  • Gana (6 points): temperament grouped as Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa; read for how the two handle conflict and pressure.
  • Bhakoot (7 points): the distance between the two Moon signs; read for family welfare, shared prosperity and emotional ease.
  • Nadi (8 points): the three nadis (Adi, Madhya, Antya) of the birth nakshatras; traditionally read for health, constitution and children.

Is 18 out of 36 gunas enough for marriage?

By convention, 18 or more gunas is considered acceptable, 24 to 32 good, and above 32 very good. But the number on its own is not the whole story. A score of 28 with an uncancelled Nadi dosha can be more concerning than a score of 20 where the low points come from minor kootas. And two charts can score highly on guna milan while each person’s own 7th house is under heavy strain.

Guna milan only compares the two Moons. It does not look at the ascendant, the houses, the strength of Venus or Jupiter, or the dashas. That is why a careful Jyotishi reads each chart on its own first, then compares them, and only then looks at the score.

Mangal dosha in Kundali matching, and when it is cancelled

Mangal dosha (also called Manglik or Kuja dosha) is present when Mars sits in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of the chart. Some traditions add the 2nd house, and it is usually checked from the Moon and Venus as well as from the ascendant. Mars there is read as intensity and friction in married life.

A large share of people have Mars in one of these houses, so the cancellations matter as much as the dosha itself. Traditional cancellations include:

  • Both partners have Mangal dosha of similar strength.
  • Mars is in its own sign (Aries or Scorpio) or exalted in Capricorn.
  • Jupiter aspects or sits with Mars, or strongly supports the house involved.
  • Specific sign and house combinations named in the classical texts, which vary between lineages.
  • Many families also hold that the dosha softens after about age 28; this is a belief worth knowing, not a rule.

Nadi dosha and Bhakoot dosha explained

Nadi dosha arises when both people share the same nadi, which scores 0 out of 8. Because Nadi carries the most points, it is the dosha families ask about most. Traditional texts list exceptions, for example when both share the same Moon sign but different nakshatras, or the same nakshatra in a different pada, and Jyotishis differ on how much weight to give each exception. It should be read alongside both charts’ 5th house and Jupiter, not on its own.

Bhakoot dosha arises when the two Moon signs sit 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 from each other, which scores 0 out of 7. The 6/8 relationship is taken most seriously. It is traditionally cancelled when both Moon signs share the same lord, or when their lords are friends, and a strong Graha Maitri score usually softens it.

Kundali matching by name vs by birth details

In Nepal, a name is often given from the first syllable of the birth nakshatra, so the name can stand in for the nakshatra and Moon sign. Matching by name uses that syllable to estimate both. It is a reasonable fallback when nothing else is known, but many people today have names that were not chosen this way, and the same syllable can belong to two different signs.

Matching by birth details (date, time and place) is always more reliable. If the birth date is known, use it; if only a Bikram Sambat date is written in the family records, convert it first with the date converter.

Kundali matching without birth time: what can and can’t be judged

Many people, especially those born in Nepal a generation or two ago, do not have a recorded birth time. Matching is still possible, with honest limits.

What can usually be judged: the Moon moves through roughly one nakshatra a day, so the birth date and place usually fix the Moon sign and often the nakshatra. That is enough for guna milan, Nadi and Bhakoot, and for Mangal dosha checked from the Moon. If the Moon changed nakshatra or sign that day, both possibilities are worked out and compared.

What cannot be judged reliably: the ascendant and therefore the houses, the 7th house and its lord, Mangal dosha from the ascendant, the Navamsha chart, and exact dasha start dates. These are exactly the parts that refine a matching, so a no-time reading leans on the Moon, Venus, Jupiter and the planets’ signs, and says plainly where it is uncertain. Sometimes a Jyotishi can narrow the birth time from known life events, but that is an estimate, not a recorded fact.

Kundali matching when families live in different countries

It is now common for one family to be in Kathmandu, the groom in Sydney and the bride in London or New York. The matching itself is no different: each chart is calculated for the place and local time of birth, not where the person lives now. What changes is the practical side. Families often want to join the same call from three time zones, with the explanation in Nepali for the parents and in English for the couple. A video consultation handles both.

Try the free Kundali matching tool, then talk it through

The Antaryami matching tool calculates Ashtakoot guna milan, Nadi, Bhakoot and Mangal dosha from both sets of birth details, free. It is a good place to start. If the score is borderline, a dosha appears, or the families simply want a proper reading before deciding, book a consultation with Jyotish Prakash Basistha: both charts are prepared before the call and read through together with you.

Questions people ask

How many gunas should match for marriage?

Conventionally 18 out of 36 is the minimum, and higher is better. But the score is only a first screening. Nadi and Bhakoot dosha, Mangal dosha and each person’s own 7th house matter as much as the total.

Can a Manglik marry a non-Manglik?

Often, yes. Many Mangal doshas are cancelled by Mars’s sign, Jupiter’s aspect or other factors, and the other partner’s chart may balance it. It needs both charts read together rather than a yes-or-no rule.

Is Nadi dosha always a reason not to marry?

No. There are recognised exceptions, and it should be weighed with the rest of both charts. It is a reason to look carefully, not a verdict on its own.

Can Kundali matching be done without birth time?

Yes, guna milan and the Moon-based doshas usually can, because the date and place fix the Moon. The ascendant, houses and exact dasha dates cannot be judged reliably without a time.

Is matching by name accurate?

Only if the name was given from the birth nakshatra syllable, as is traditional in Nepal. Otherwise it is a rough guide. Birth details are always better.

We live in different countries. Can the whole family join the consultation?

Yes. Consultations are by phone or video, in Nepali or English, so parents in Nepal and the couple abroad can join the same call.
