Choosing a wedding date: Nepali Vivah Muhurta

In a Nepali wedding, the date is rarely just a date. Families want a proper Vivah Muhurta, a sait chosen from the panchang so that the marriage begins at an auspicious time. For families abroad, this has become more complicated than it used to be: the venue in Sydney or London needs booking a year ahead, relatives are flying in from Nepal, and the dates circulating online are usually calculated for somewhere else.

This guide explains how a wedding muhurta is chosen in the Nepali tradition, and why it must be worked out for the place where the wedding will happen. It deliberately does not list dates: a muhurta that is right for one couple in one city may be wrong for another.

What is a Vivah Muhurta?

A muhurta is an auspicious window of time chosen for an important beginning. For a wedding, the Jyotishi chooses a day, and within that day a time for the central rites, when the tithi, nakshatra, yoga and lagna are favourable and the season is suitable. The muhurta is then checked against the bride’s and groom’s own charts.

Tithi and nakshatra for a wedding

The rikta tithis (Chaturthi, Navami and Chaturdashi) and Aunsi are traditionally avoided. Among the nakshatras, those classically recommended for marriage include Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Mula, Uttarashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati. A day with a good nakshatra can still be ruled out by an unfavourable yoga or by Bhadra (Vishti karana) falling over the ceremony time.

The wedding lagna: why the exact time matters

Within a good day, the Jyotishi looks for a strong lagna, the rising sign at the moment of the main rite. Benefic planets in the angular houses, a clean 7th house and an 8th house free of malefics are preferred. The lagna changes roughly every two hours, which is why a muhurta is given as a time window rather than just a date, and why the ceremony schedule should be planned around it.

Which months are avoided for Nepali weddings?

Some stretches of the year are traditionally closed to weddings, which is why the wedding season in Nepal bunches into certain months.

  • Chaturmas: the four months from Harishayani Ekadashi to Haribodhini Ekadashi, when Vishnu is said to rest.
  • Poush and Chaitra: the solar months when the Sun is in Sagittarius and Pisces, known as Kharmas, traditionally avoided.
  • Adhik Maas (Malmas): the extra lunar month added in some years.
  • Any period when Venus or Jupiter is combust (asta), explained below.

Shukra asta and Guru asta: why Venus and Jupiter must be visible

When a planet comes too close to the Sun it disappears from the sky and is called asta, combust. Venus is the karaka of marriage and Jupiter the karaka of blessing and, traditionally, of the husband, so weddings are not held while either is combust. This is often called tara asta, or tara doob, among Nepali families. Jupiter is combust for roughly a month each year; Venus has longer combust periods at intervals. These stretches can remove weeks from an otherwise good season, and they shift from year to year, which is one reason old lists cannot simply be reused.

Why families abroad must use local time for a wedding muhurta

A tithi ends at the same instant everywhere on Earth, but that instant falls at a different clock time, and sometimes on a different date, depending on where you are. Nepali practice takes the tithi prevailing at local sunrise, and sunrise in Sydney, London or New York is nothing like sunrise in Kathmandu. So the tithi of the day can differ by location. The lagna depends entirely on the local horizon, so a ceremony time correct for Kathmandu means nothing in another city.

For example, New York is roughly ten to eleven hours behind Nepal, depending on daylight saving. A morning muhurta in Kathmandu falls on the previous evening in New York, often under a different tithi and always under a different lagna. The muhurta must be calculated afresh for the wedding city.

Why “best wedding dates 2026/2027” lists from India don’t apply directly

Search for wedding dates and most of what appears are lists from Indian websites. They are usually calculated for an Indian city in Indian Standard Time, and they follow that region’s customs: some use different conventions for naming lunar months, and regions differ on which months and doshas they avoid. Nepali families normally follow the Nepali panchang tradition, which has its own conventions.

Even a correct general list is only a starting point. It does not know where your wedding is, and it does not know the bride and groom. A date can be good in general and still be unsuitable for a particular couple.

Matching the wedding muhurta to the couple

Traditionally the muhurta is checked against both people’s Moon signs and nakshatras. The Jyotishi looks at Chandra bala (the Moon’s transit relative to each person’s Moon) and Tara bala (the day’s nakshatra relative to each birth nakshatra). Many Nepali Jyotishis also check Guru bala for the bride and Surya bala for the groom. Only days that pass for both are shortlisted.

How to get a wedding muhurta for your city

Book a consultation and bring the birth details of the bride and groom, the city where the wedding will be held, and the window you are considering, for example a particular season or the months when relatives can travel. Mention any fixed constraints such as venue availability or a Saturday-only booking. The muhurta is calculated for your city and explained to the family, in Nepali or English.

To get a feel for the calendar in the meantime, the Antaryami Patro and Panchang show tithi, nakshatra and sunrise for your own location.

Questions people ask

What are the best wedding dates in 2026 and 2027?

There is no single list that suits every couple. Good dates depend on the wedding city, the local tithi and lagna, and the bride’s and groom’s charts, so a muhurta should be worked out for you specifically.

Can we use a muhurta from Nepal for a wedding in Australia?

Not directly. The tithi at sunrise and the lagna depend on location, so a time correct in Kathmandu will not be correct in Sydney or Melbourne. It must be recalculated for the wedding city.

Why are there no weddings when Shukra or Guru is asta?

Venus and Jupiter are the main karakas of marriage and blessing. When either is combust, hidden by the Sun, tradition holds that their support is missing, so weddings are postponed until they are visible again.

Which months are not good for a Nepali wedding?

Traditionally Chaturmas, Poush and Chaitra (Kharmas), Adhik Maas, and any time Venus or Jupiter is combust. The exact boundaries change every year and must be read from the panchang.

How far ahead should we ask for a wedding muhurta?

Ideally before you book a venue, since venues abroad are often booked a year or more ahead. Asking early lets you choose a venue date that fits a good muhurta, rather than the other way round.

Do we need Kundali matching before choosing a wedding date?

Most families do the matching first, then the muhurta. The same birth details are used for both, and the muhurta is checked against each person’s Moon and nakshatra.
